Lola Versus (SIFF 2012)

Meet Lola. She’s smart and funny, is working on her masters thesis, and when her boyfriend, Luke, proposes, it feels like the final piece of the puzzle of her life is falling perfectly into place. Months into the wedding-planning process, Luke gets cold feet and breaks it off with Lola. This sends her into a tailspin of depression and confusion. Just when she had thought she was happy and her life was perfect, she’s forced to consider who she really is, what she wants from life, and who she wants to share it with – if she even wants to share it.  Lola’s best friends provide comic insight into the myriad of situations she encounters, and the dialogue throughout the movie is fairly well-written and entertaining. Although this wasn’t a standout movie from SIFF 2012, I did enjoy this ride through Lola’s worst year and I appreciated experiencing the laughs and cringes that helped to shape her character.
