ELIMINATE: Archie Cookson (SIFF 2012)

Archie Cookson is a mild-mannered translator working for the British Secret Service. He has no ambition for entering a life of covert ops, but is unwittingly thrust into just that when he brings some of his translating work home with him. Suddenly he finds himself on the run not from the Russians, or the Chinese, or some other foreign threat, but from his very own colleagues in MI6. What starts out as a plan to flee soon transitions into meek acceptance of his fate as his would-be assassin encourages him to reconcile with his family while he still has a chance. But in a game changing moment, urged on by a renewed confidence after meeting an exciting new woman, Archie turns the tables on his pursuers and starts fighting back!

ELIMINATE: Archie Cookson has a fun storyline and some good action. It ultimately feels just a little unpolished, but if it had that big-budget Hollywood shine then it would lose some of the rough-edged British humor that gives the movie a lot of its charm. I really enjoyed this film and would definitely recommend it.

Provided Film Synopsis
Translator-analyst Archie Cookson’s life has reached a dead end, personally and professionally. He has a tiresome job in one of the dankest corners of the British Secret Service, an unloving marriage, and an oddly detached son. But when a set of stolen secret tapes mysteriously get sent to Archie, senior MI6 officials target his office for liquidation. Archie unwittingly survives the purge of his departmental colleagues only to be confronted by his longtime friend and ex-CIA “brother-in-arms,” Ennis Miller. Initially appearing to be his salvation, Ennis is soon revealed to be a reluctant assassin hired to finish the job, magnanimously granting Archie a stay of execution to reconcile with his estranged family. As the grim reality of the next 48 hours begins to dawn on him, a chance encounter with an alluring young woman fires up the long-lost passion and fight he once possessed. Filled with dry, sardonic wit, ELIMINATE: Archie Cookson is a black, humorous delight for audiences craving cinematic espionage thrills, a la Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
