Better Living Through Chemistry

I was initially excited to see Better Living Through Chemistry because of Sam Rockwell and Olivia Wilde, and I’m happy to say it didn’t disappoint. My interest was captured from the moment the opening credits started with miniature townsfolk figurines going about their daily deeds!

At it’s core, this movie is a classic tale of the straight-laced pushover who is brought out of his shell by the vivacious and alluring bad girl. Of course, there’s a wide range of internal awakenings and external fallout that goes along with such a radical transition. The inadvertent comedy that ensues while Rockwell becomes a self-medicating pharmacist is an entertaining, and at times entertainingly awkward, audience experience.

Both Rockwell and Wilde turn in stellar performances, and they are also supported by a spot-on cast of characters that add depth and emotion to flesh out the day-to-day happenings of their small town life. I especially enjoyed Norbert Leo Butz as the DEA agent investigating Rockwell’s pharmacy as his pill popping starts to leave a trail.

This was an excellent dramatic comedy and I highly recommend it!

Provided Film Synopsis
This murderously funny dark comedy stars Sam Rockwell (The Way Way Back) and Olivia Wilde (Drinking Buddies) in the tale of a small town pharmacist who embarks on a drug-and-alcohol fueled affair with a seductive customer.

Doug Varney (Rockwell) leads an uneventful life - a small town pharmacist whose daily life centers around his family and working daily at the drugstore that he bought from his controlling father-in-law. Then he delivers a prescription to the home of Elizabeth Roberts (Olivia Wilde), a gorgeous seductress with multiple addictions who eagerly introduces Doug to extra-large martinis, uninhibited bedroom behavior, and the illicit pleasures of the pharmacopeia he has access to in his store.

But Doug's extracurricular activities may be his undoing, as a routine DEA audit reveals serious discrepancies in his inventory. Convinced he’s about to lose everything, Doug hatches an ill-considered scheme with Elizabeth that will allow them to have it all... but at an almost unthinkable price.
